We are hiring a product-minded Staff Backend Engineer (individual contributor) to design and build the Kitchen Display System (KDS) and kitchen sequencing systems that will power Wonder's restaurants as the company scales from tens to hundreds of locations
- This role will drive technical strategy and delivery for systems that optimize order preparation, enable operational analytics, and ensure reliable production operations across distributed services
- Collaborate with operations researchers, product managers, designers, and engineers to design and build the kitchen sequencing system and kitchen display system
- Lead technical projects from planning through execution and delivery
- Translate advanced optimization algorithms into robust, scalable, production-ready code in collaboration with Operations Research and Product teams
- Enhance the KDS simulator into a standalone, modular tool for offline research and what-if analysis
- Develop and maintain data pipelines and infrastructure for real-time and historical inputs (e.g., sensor/operational data, appliance capacity, line build times) to feed sequencing algorithms
- Design and implement monitoring, alerting, and telemetry to ensure operational excellence of sequencing services
- Design and maintain distributed systems comprising synchronous and asynchronous services and data stores with varied consistency and performance trade-offs
- Build and operate systems on public cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, or GCP) and use containerization and orchestration tools (Docker, Kubernetes)
Advocate for and implement strong CI/CD, testing (unit/integration), and observable deployments to support confident rollout of complex features
